5 Tricks to Calm Yourself in an IELTS Speaking Test Interview

Most English speaking tests are computerized nowadays, but not the IELTS. The problem with the IELTS speaking test is that it is in person, face to face with an examiner. A lot of people call it an interview, but let us start by refuting why it is not an interview.

1. It is actually NOT an interview.

The first reason to be calm is that it is not an interview. Your language is being evaluated. This means that your knowledge will not be tested in a specific field technically. It is just a friendly conversation about your likes, dislikes and general thoughts about daily-life matters. Another point related to interviews is that if you do not impress at an interview, you lose the job opportunity. Luckily, you can retake the IELTS test as many times as you like.

2. Give yourself a treat before the speaking test.

That means, so whatever that makes you happy the most, and do it before the test. Waiting for the test for at least 30 minutes can also be particularly stressful. Make sure to take a book or magazine to pass the time, because sometimes they take your phone while you're in the waiting room, not just during the test.

3. Sleep well. A lot of what is involved in the speaking test is sub-conscious and depends on your mind's alertness levels. Keep your brain in its best shape by making sure you've had good quality sleep before the test.

4. Conquer Anxiety.

If your heart usually beats too fast for you to think properly, think of taking something that calms your heart down. If you have any unreasonable fear that makes you stutter, think of taking something to reduce anxiety. Just consult your doctor, and you will be fine.

5. Pretend you are speaking to a friend.

My favorite trick is to pretend the examiner is a friend who is much older than me, or my boss at work who I have a good relationship with. Just pretend the examiner is someone else, and that you are not in a test. That is a friend just assessing your personality by giving you a lot of personal questions.
